Throat Pain

Synonym(s):

Visit the Emergency Department if you have any of the following:

  • Shortness of breath, especially if associated with throat tightness or swelling.
  • Inability to swallow.
  • A non-visible lodged foreign body. (e.g. Fish bone).

Visit the GP or Polyclinic if you have any of the following:

  • A visible lodged foreign body that can be removed by the GP.
  • Fever with the throat pain.
  • Hoarseness of voice.

What you can do:

  • Gargle with Warm Salt Water: This is a classic and effective remedy. Mix half a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and gargle for several seconds before spitting it out. The salt water can help reduce swelling and clean the throat.
  • Drink Warm Liquids: Warm liquids can be soothing. Try warm water with a teaspoon of honey, herbal teas (like chamomile or ginger), or a clear broth. Honey has natural antibacterial properties and can help coat the throat.
  • Drink Cold liquids: This can help to numb the throat and allow swallowing.
  • Use Lozenges or Hard Candy: Sucking on lozenges or hard candy can stimulate saliva production, which helps to keep your throat moist and can provide temporary relief from pain and a dry cough.
  • Rest Your Voice: If your throat pain is related to overuse, try to speak as little as possible. Avoid shouting or whispering, as whispering can actually put more strain on your vocal cords.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids is crucial for keeping your throat moist and helping your body fight off infection. Stick to water, herbal tea, and broth, and avoid dehydrating beverages like alcohol and caffeine.
  • Eat Soft Foods: During a sore throat, it can be painful to eat solid, crunchy, or spicy foods. Opt for soft, easy-to-swallow foods like soup, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and yogurt.
  • Avoid Irritants: Steer clear of things that can worsen throat pain, such as cigarette smoke, dusty environments, and highly acidic or spicy foods.
