Eye Conditions

Synonym(s):

Visit the Emergency Department (with Emergency Eye Services*) if you have any of the following:

  • Sudden vision loss, disturbance (i.e. seeing double) or appearance of multiple floaters.
  • Pain over the eyes.
  • Eye discomfort after a chemical splash or an injury to the eye.

*SKH ED does not have emergency eye services.

Visit the GP or Polyclinic if you have any of the following:

  • Red eyes with a feeling of grittiness or irritation.
  • Red eyes with a discharge that you suspect is an infection (e.g., conjunctivitis).

What you can do:

  • Flush Your Eyes with Saline Solution: If you suspect an irritant (like dust or pollen) is in your eye, gently rinse it out with an eye wash or a sterile saline solution.
  • Flush your eyes under running tap water for 10-20 minutes if exposed to a chemical splash.
  • Use a Cool Compress: Place a clean, cool, damp cloth over your closed eyes for about 5-10 minutes. The cool temperature can help constrict the blood vessels and reduce swelling and redness.
  • Try Over-the-Counter Eye Drops: For red eyes caused by dryness or eye strain, lubricating eye drops (Artificial Tears) can help moisturize your eyes and provide relief.
  • Antihistamine Eye Drops: For red eyes caused by allergies, these drops can help relieve itching and redness.
  • Take Digital Breaks: If you spend a lot of time on a computer or phone, follow the 20-20-20 Rule. Every 20 minutes, look at an object 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps reduce eye strain and dryness.
  • Manage Allergies: If allergies are the cause, take steps to reduce your exposure to allergens. Use air purifiers and wash your hands after touching pets.
  • Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can contribute to dry eyes and redness. Make sure you are drinking enough water throughout the day.
  • Protect Your Eyes: Wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection when you are outdoors to shield your eyes from the sun and environmental irritants like wind and dust.
  • Practice Good Hygiene: Avoid rubbing your eyes, as this can worsen redness and introduce bacteria. Wash your hands frequently, especially if you wear contact lenses. Clean your contact lenses properly and never sleep in them unless they are specifically designed for overnight wear.
