What is - Anorectal Biofeedback

Anorectal Biofeedback is a specialised physical therapy for the pelvic floor muscles. It is a non-invasive, painless treatment that uses sensors and visual or auditory signals on a computer screen to “feed back” information about your body’s functions. This helps you learn how to better control and coordinate your anal sphincter and pelvic floor muscles.

Why is this therapy done?

Biofeedback is effective for treating:

  • Fecal Incontinence (leakage of stool).
  • Chronic Constipation with dyssynergia (where muscles don’t coordinate correctly during a bowel movement).
  • Pelvic floor dyssynergia.
  • To improve sensation in the rectum.

What happens during a session?

  1. Sensors: A small, pressure-sensitive sensor is placed in your anal canal. Surface electrodes may also be placed on your skin.
  2. Feedback: The sensors are connected to a computer monitor that displays your muscle activity in real-time, like a video game.
  3. Training: A therapist will guide you through exercises, teaching you how to:
    • Strengthen weak muscles when you see the correct signal on the screen.
    • Relax muscles that are too tight.
    • Coordinate pushing and relaxing muscles effectively for a bowel movement.
  4. A session typically lasts 45 to 60 minutes. Most people need 3-6 sessions to see significant improvement.

After the Session

You can go about your normal day. You will be given exercises to practice at home to reinforce what you learned.

Are there any risks?

Biofeedback is extremely safe and has no risks or side effects. It is a learning process that requires your active participation.
