Without lifestyle changes, at least 35% of persons with pre-diabetes in Singapore will progress to type 2 diabetes over 8 years. Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition that can lead to health issues such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, or loss of limbs.
Diabetes can be prevented with healthy lifestyle habits and regular monitoring of your health condition.
The Pre-DICTED programme is a research study to test the effectiveness of lifestyle intervention with addition of metformin, when required, for diabetes prevention.
Pre-DICTED stands for Pre-Diabetes Interventions and Continued Tracking to Ease-out Diabetes.
How does it work?
The programme is designed to arm you with the necessary knowledge and skills to make lifestyle modifications (e.g. healthy eating and regular physical activity) so as to reduce your risk of developing diabetes. Your goals will be
to achieve a weight loss of ≥ 5% of your baseline weight and to exercise at least 150 minutes a week.
The programme will also provide regularing monitoring of your pre-diabetic condition. You will receive 6-monthly diabetes screening for a period of 3 years.
At the start of the programme, you will be assigned to either the standard care group or the treatment group. You will have an equal chance of being assigned to either group.
If assigned to the standard care group, you will receive individual counselling on lifestyle modications from your primary care providers.
If assigned to the treatment group, you will attend group sessions to learn healthy eating habits, add physical activities to your lifestyle, and stay motivated to be healthy.
Incentives will be given to motivate you to reach your weight loss and exercise goals.
In addition, metformin may be added on after 6 months of lifestyle modifications if you are deemed to have very high risk of developing diabetes.
Recruitment of participants has concluded in January 2021. For more information, please email
