Professor Tazeen H. Jafar is a distinguished physician scientist and global health leader, holding a tenured position at Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore. She serves as a Visiting Consultant Renal Medicine at Singapore General Hospital, a Visiting Professor of Medicine at Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan, and a Consultant Nephrologist at Durham VA Healthcare System. Additionally, she holds a Professorship at Duke Global Health Institute, Duke University.
Her academic journey began at Aga Khan University, followed by residencies and fellowships in Medicine-Pediatrics and clinical nephrology in the USA. She also holds a master's in public health from Harvard University.
For over 25 years, Professor Jafar has conducted pioneering research in chronic non-communicable diseases globally. Notably, her work on the COBRA-BPS trial demonstrated the effectiveness of a community health worker-led intervention in controlling blood pressure, published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
She directs the SingHypertension and SKOPE trials in Singapore and is leading feasibility studies in rural North Carolina. Her contributions have earned her recognition, including the 2012 Boehringer Ingelheim Developing World Award.
Professor Jafar mentors numerous trainees and serves on editorial boards of scientific journals. She actively engages in policy forums addressing non-communicable diseases, collaborating with organizations like the WHO.
