Associate Professor Sam Conrad Joyce

Dr Sam Conrad Joyce is the head of Meta Design Lab, an interdisciplinary research group based in Singapore working on AI and informatics applied to urban and architectural design. Focusing on leveraging real world data to help understand the present designed world, and plan sustainable healthy cities for the mid- to long-term future. Specialising on methods involving, analytics, machine learning, novel senor information, innovative metrics, data-visualisation, and generative AI.  

He holds a position as Associate Professor at the Singapore University of Technology and Design with a join appointment in Design AI and Architecture and Sustainable Design Pillar. Prior to this he was Associate in the globally recognised Foster + Partners, working in the applied research and development group. In all instances pushing to leverage leading edge computational techniques on the complex multifaceted domain of architecture and planning. 
 
Leading the Meta Design Lab’s work on a range of projects supporting local government including applying LLMs to planning decision support for the URA, using population health methods to understand dengue and building design, and applying CCTV AI and analytics for social-spatial understanding of urban recreation and wellness for NParks. Sam collaborates extensively with others in complimentary fields including the Lee Kwan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities, the CNRS Paris, CGH, SingHealth, and NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health.
