Assoc Prof Chong Keng Hua is Associate Professor of Architecture and Sustainable Design at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), where he coordinates collaboration and social programmes, and directs the Positive City Lab, DesignZ and Social Urban Lab (SOULab). He is also a Founding Partner of COLOURS: Collectively Ours, an award-winning design practice specialising in public space and social impact, as well as Visiting Senior Academician at Changi General Hospital, Singapore.
Assoc Prof Chong’s research on social architecture particularly in the areas of ageing, health and data-driven community design has led to extensive international publications, including two books – Second Beginnings (Lien Foundation, 2018) and Creative Ageing Cities (Routledge, 2018), as well as an upcoming book, Data-driven Smart Community Design (Routledge). Design interventions led by him have won several awards, including the Asia-Pacific Eldercare Innovation Silver Architecture Awards, and finalist for Singapore President’s Design Award, INDE Awards and A+ Awards.
An advocate for social architecture and community design, he leads community development projects in Southeast Asia, and coordinates Community X – an alliance of community practitioners in Singapore with a mission to professionalise community-driven practices. Upon returning from visiting professorship at Aalto University, Finland, his research currently centres on social design for physical health, mental well-being, and dementia inclusivity.
