Hormonal therapy

Synonym(s):
  • Your cancer cells will be tested to see if the cancer cells have estrogen or progesterone receptors.
  • If this is positive, then it means that your cancer cell growth can be stimulated by estrogen or progesterone.
  • Hormonal therapy can block this effect.

Common Hormonal Drugs Used in Breast Cancer

  1. Tamoxifen
    • May increase risk of uterine cancer by 1%
    • Slight increased risk of deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in the legs)
  2. Aromatase Inhibitor. Examples: Anastrozole, Letrozole, Exemestane
    • Risk of osteoporosis
    • Some patients experience joint pains
