Welcome Message from Organising Co-Chairs

Dr Chong Shin Yuet
Co-Organising Chairperson,
S3 Conference 2019

Senior Consultant,
Department of Anaesthesia, Singapore General Hospital
Director of Simulation,
Anaesthesia Academic Clinical Programme

It is with much excitement that we bring back the S3 Conference from 22 to 25 October 2019 to Singapore, a signature healthcare simulation event organised by three renowned institutes – SIMS (Singapore), SESAM (Europe) and SimGHOSTS (USA).

More than 500 delegates from all over the world came together in Singapore for the first S3 Conference in 2017, which was a resounding success. Two things became clear after the inaugural conference – the tremendous potential that healthcare simulation has to advance the way we teach and learn, and the need to build a stronger community of best practices in healthcare simulation.

Simulation has seen an expansion of its roles in healthcare over the years; from training high-functioning interprofessional healthcare teams to developing patient safety initiatives, among many others. Recent leaps in technological advances, such as Virtual Reality (VR), Artificial Reality (AR) and 3D printing, have further empowered healthcare educators to create increasingly realistic and immersive experiences in learning. With the theme "Beyond the Now: Transforming Healthcare Simulation", the S3 Conference in 2019 aims to re-define your perspective on the use and impact of simulation, and the role it plays in transforming learning to enhance patient care.

At this Conference, you may look forward to hearing from experts in the field of simulation on their experiences in using the various simulation modalities. Industry partners at the forefront of simulation-related technology will also showcase their latest innovations. During the four-day programme, we hope to bring you the latest technologies and techniques in healthcare simulation beyond the tried and tested that will transform learning and make a difference to our patients' lives.

I look forward to welcoming you to sunny Singapore, which has much to offer in terms of its wonderful myriad of sights, sounds and food. Together, let's ride the wave of simulation and transform learning for better patient care!

S3 Conference 2019

The S3 Conference draws on the best in healthcare simulation practices and research from around the world, bringing together simulation colleagues together to share and learn in Singapore, the dynamic heart of the Asia/Pacific region. No other conference draws together three significant players in the simulation world  SESAMSIMS and SimGHOSTS  – in this way. The results of the first S3 conference in 2017 were fantastic, and we are excited to be joining forces again for the second S3 Conference in 2019.

In recent years, we have seen simulation being used in much more complex and productive ways. Moving beyond simulation as a teaching/training modality, simulation has now been employed in areas such as healthcare improvement and research in clinical practice. These will significantly shape the development of new processes and systems in healthcare delivery, and groom more efficient and cohesive healthcare teams.

The S3 Conference 2019 hopes to spur on these trends in healthcare simulation, which is why we have chosen the theme, "Beyond the Now: Transforming Healthcare Simulation". By encouraging delegates to differentiate and expand their perspectives on simulation practice, we hope to take effective steps towards transforming patient care in the long run. This year's Conference offers a strong programme with specialised tracks for researchers, curriculum designers, debriefers, faculty developers, technology and operations staff, administrators, managers, simulation faculty, and assessment experts. Delegates will be able to engage with fresh and exciting ideas, and personally try out new simulation approaches to supplement their existing practices.

The Conference presents a unique opportunity to work closely with some of the world leaders in healthcare simulation, while learning from and collaborating with some of the best researchers and technologists from Asia and beyond. Don't forget the fantastic location: if you haven't been to Singapore, you're missing out on one of the most interesting and vibrant capital cities in the world!

I look forward to pushing the boundaries of simulation together with you at this year's S3 Conference!

Executive Director, The Gathering of Healthcare Simulation Technology Specialists, USA

Following the outstanding success of the first S3 Conference in 2017, SimGHOSTS is proud to once again partner with SIMS and SESAM for the S3 Conference 2019!

An important calendar event in the field of healthcare simulation, the S3 Conference caters to the full spectrum of healthcare simulation professionals involved in conceptualising and running simulation programs. Jointly organised by respected international leaders in simulation, SIMS, SESAM and SimGHOSTS, the S3 Conference aims to present skills and knowledge that delegates can apply to transform their simulation practice. The Conference also provides networking opportunities for delegates to connect with fellow simulation professionals to forge new collaborations in order to overcome complex challenges faced in simulation training.

The theme of the conference this year is a relevant and timely one, "Beyond the Now: Transforming Healthcare Simulation". It encourages the embracing of the latest technological innovations, which can exponentially advance the success and effectiveness of simulation training programmes. In the spirit of evolving healthcare simulation "beyond the now", the Conference also promotes the sharing of wisdom and expertise from different simulation practices and settings around the world to bring about greater impact and efficiency in patient care.

The S3 Conference 2019 will be held at Academia, Singapore, where a variety of simulated environments and state-of-the-art equipment can create and deliver a diverse range of simulation experiences. I invite to you and your team to join us for another wonderful S3 experience and look forward to meeting you all in Singapore!
