What is - MiVu Test

The MiVu test is performed during an upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy to assess the health and integrity of the oesophagus (food pipe) in real time.

It entails the use of a small cap attached to the endoscope to detect changes in the oesophageal lining that may indicate injury or inflammation.

Why is it done?

Evaluation with the MiVu system may be recommended if you have symptoms suggestive of Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), a condition in which stomach acid or other contents flow back up into the oesophagus. Common symptoms of GERD include:

  • Heartburn
  • Chest discomfort
  • Regurgitation (a sensation of food or fluid coming back up into the throat)

The MiVu system assesses for oesophageal injury. The results are interpreted together with your symptoms, endoscopy findings, and other test results to help guide further management.

What happens during the test?

The MiVu test is usually performed at the same time as a standard upper GI endoscopy.

During the procedure:

  • A thin, flexible tube (endoscope) with a camera is passed gently through the mouth into the oesophagus and stomach.
  • The MiVu Endocap is attached to the tip of the endoscope.
  • Sensors on the device will make brief contact with the oesophageal wall to take measurements related to tissue integrity.

A reduction in integrity suggests injury to the oesophageal lining. This is an indirect indicator of acid-related damage.

Similar changes may also be seen in other conditions affecting the oesophagus, such as eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE), although the pattern of involvement may differ.

The procedure is typically performed under light sedation, so there might be some discomfort but you should not feel pain.

How do I prepare for the test?

You will need to fast before the procedure, as is required for a standard upper GI endoscopy.

What to expect after the procedure?

You will be monitored until the effects of sedation wear off. Most patients are allowed to go home on the same day.

Your doctor will discuss the results with you and advise on the next steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any risks associated with MiVU?

Most patients tolerate the test well.

Rarely, serious complications can occur, such as bleeding or injury (perforation) to the oesophagus. Such complications are uncommon but may require medical intervention if they do occur.

How does MiVu compare with other tests?

The gold standard for diagnosing GERD is an acid (pH) test, such as:

The MiVu test does not directly measure acid levels. However, it:

  • Provides immediate information during endoscopy
  • Does not require prolonged monitoring
  • May reduce the need for additional testing

If the results are inconclusive, your doctor may still recommend further pH testing.
