What is - Bravo pH Capsule

The Bravo pH capsule test is used to measure acid levels in the esophagus (food pipe). It aids in the diagnosis and assessment of acid reflux (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, or GERD).

During the test, a very small capsule is attached to the lining of the lower oesophagus. The capsule measures acid levels and sends the information to a small recorder that you wear around your waist.

Why is it done?

The Bravo pH capsule test is commonly recommended when GERD is suspected, particularly if an upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy does not clearly explain your symptoms.

Symptoms of GERD include:

  • Chest pain
  • Heart burn
  • Regurgitation (a sensation of food or liquid coming up into the throat)

This test helps determine whether acid reflux is contributing to your symptoms and assists your doctor in deciding the most appropriate treatment for you.

What to expect during the procedure?

The Bravo capsule is usually deployed at the end of an upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy. This procedure uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera to examine your oesophagus and stomach.

Once the examination is complete, the capsule is attached to the lower oesophagus. The procedure is typically performed under light sedation, so you should not feel pain.

Certain medications, such as acid-suppressing drugs, may need to be stopped before the test. You will also need to fast before the procedure. Clear instructions on this will be provided before your appointment.

Please inform your doctor before the procedure if you:

  • Have a pacemaker or implantable cardiac device
  • Have a history of bleeding problems

What happens after the procedure?

Once the capsule is in place, it will continuously measure acid reflux from the stomach into the oesophagus. This information is sent to the recorder you wear throughout the study.

The test usually lasts 2 to 3 days but you do not need to stay in hospital for it.

You will be allowed home on the same day once you have recovered from the sedation. You will be able to return to your normal activities and diet for the rest of the study.

You will be asked to:

  • Press buttons on the recorder when symptoms occur
  • Record when you eat, lie down, or get up

You will need to return the recorder at the end of the study. The data will then be  analysed and discussed with you at your follow-up appointment.

When the study is complete, the capsule will naturally fall off and pass through the digestive system without you noticing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any risks associated with Brave Capsule Test?

Most people tolerate the Bravo pH test well, and complications are uncommon.

Minor side effects and complications include:

  • Temporary sore throat and chest discomfort
  • Technical issues with the capsule or recorder
  • The capsule detaching earlier or later than expected

Rarely, more serious complications can occur, such as:

  • Bleeding or injury (perforation) to the oesophagus
  • Aspiration (the capsule entering the airway)

These complications are uncommon but may require medical intervention if they do occur.

Is it safe to undergo an MRI scan after the Bravo pH capsule test?

MRI scans are not recommended while the Bravo capsule is still inside your body. You should avoid MRI scans for 30 days after the test unless it has been confirmed that the capsule has passed. If you are unsure, please check with your doctor before scheduling an MRI scan.
