What is - 3D Endoanal Ultrasound

A 3D Endoanal Ultrasound is a scan that produces detailed, three-dimensional images of the muscles and structures surrounding the anal canal. A small ultrasound probe is inserted into the anus to create images, much like an ultrasound during pregnancy. It is the best test to look for injuries to the anal sphincter muscles.

Why is this test done?

Your doctor may order this test to:

  • Identify the cause of fecal incontinence, such as a tear or defect in the anal sphincter muscles (often from childbirth).
  • Evaluate anal fistulas, abscesses, or other anal conditions.
  • Plan for surgery to repair the sphincter muscles.

How do I prepare?

You may be asked to use a small enema to empty your rectum 1-2 hours before the procedure.

What happens during the procedure?

  1. Positioning: You will lie on your side on an examination table.
  2. The Probe: A small, lubricated, blunt-tipped ultrasound probe (about the width of a finger) is gently inserted into your anal canal.
  3. The Scan: The probe is rotated slowly to obtain 360-degree images of the sphincter muscles. You may feel slight pressure, but it should not be painful.
  4. The scan itself usually takes 10 to 15 minutes.

After the Procedure

You can resume normal activities immediately. There are no side effects. Are there any risks? This is a very safe procedure with minimal discomfort. There is no radiation involved.
