What is - Nosebleeds

Nosebleeds are a common in children.

They are usually not serious conditions & result from irritation to the normally fragile surface of the nasal lining.

When there are nosebleeds:

  • Sit the child up and lean forward to prevent swallowing of blood
  • Pinch the tip of the nose
  • Do NOT insert tissues, gauze into the nose
  • If the bleeding persists for more than 15 minutes, see a doctor

For the next few days:

1. Avoid further irritation to the nose
2. Instruct the child to blow his nose gently

See doctor when:

  • Nosebleeds become more frequent and difficult to stop
  • There is blood elsewhere, e.g. in stools, urine and tears
  • The child seems to bruise easily or bleeds from wounds are difficult to stop
  • There are rashes/bruises on the skin and the child appears pale, tired, ill
