Profile

Dr Kenneth Chen graduated in 2007 with a medical degree of MBBS from the then National University of Singapore School of Medicine. He completed a 6-year residency in Urology with Singhealth and has cleared his specialist exit exams with distinction, having obtained the Academy of Medicine, College of Surgeons GOLD medal for best performing advanced surgical trainee in Urology. He has since obtained membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS, Edinburgh) and fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS, Glasgow) and has also completed a Masters of Clinical Investigation (MCI) course with the National University of Singapore on a National Medical Research Council Ministry of Health Healthcare Research Scholarship. He is trained in minimally invasive surgery specialising in robotic cancer surgery having completed a 1-year Uro-oncology Fellowship at the renowned Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia. His academic output includes teaching medical students in his capacity as a Senior Clinical Lecturer at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, as well as a Clinical Associate Professor with Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School. He is also involved in the nurturing and training of residents being a Singhealth Physician Faculty for Postgraduate year 1 Program as well as a core faculty member for the Singhealth Urology Residency Program.

His research interests comprise a mix of MedTech as well as translational and clinical components in the area of Uro-oncology. He was an awardee of the Nurturing Clinician Scientist Scheme under the Singhealth Surgery ACP grant and currently holds a National Medical Research Council (NMRC) New Investigator Grant for his work on developing a novel drug-eluting ureteral stent for ureteric strictures as well as upper tract urothelial cancers. His other areas of interest are in the field of prostate cancer diagnostics and advanced prostate cancer. As a consultant of the Urology Department at Singapore General Hospital, he has contributed to various activities, including organising live surgery workshops, laparoscopic animal workshops for surgical trainees, and public and GP forums. He also contributed as a member of the hospital’s Medical Board and is currently serving in the hospital’s Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, SGH Research Grant Review Committee, SGH Clinical Translational Research Committee as well as the SGH Robotic Surgery Committee. He also sits on the Société Internationale d'Urologie Innovators Committee.
