The Department of Surgical Oncology is an important cornerstone of the clinical services at National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS). As almost all tumours require surgical expertise to obtain tissues for diagnosis, the first line treatment for nearly all solid tumours is surgical resection.

Common Procedures

Treatment for Breast Cancer Surgery

Breast cancer is cancer that originates from the breast tissue. It can affect women of all ages but most commonly affects those above 40. It is potentially fatal but achieving a complete cure is also possible. There are 5 stages of breast cancer (stage 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4). Treatment at stage 0 & 1 can result in cure rates of above 90%.

Treatment for Neuroblastoma Surgery

Neuroblastoma is one of the most common cancers in childhood. It may arise from the adrenal gland (in the abdomen) and the sympathetic ganglion chain (found in the neck, chest and abdomen). More than half the patients present at less than 2 years of age, with 90% occurring within the first 8 years of life. This is a highly malignant tumour with more than 50% presenting at advanced stages. Optimal surgical excision of the tumour is important and has to be combined with various combinations of intensive chemotherapy, megatherapy with autologous stem cell transplantation, radiotherapy and new techniques in the management of minimal residual disease.

Treatment for Liver Cancer

Surgery is the treatment of choice for liver cancer. It is therefore crucial that a person with suspected liver cancer is properly assessed by a well-trained liver surgeon. The Hepatobiliary Clinic of the National Cancer Centre Singapore offers co-ordinated management of the disease by a team of experts including highly-trained and experienced hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB) surgeons.

Treatment for Cancer in the Head and Neck

Surgical, medical and radiation oncologists in National Cancer Centre Singapore's Head and Neck Clinic are highly experienced in the diagnosis, treatment and continuing care of cancers of the head and neck with special expertise in nasopharyngeal carcinoma, squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck, oropharynx and larynx.
