Over 30,000 unrelated cord blood transplants have been performed around the world with donated cord blood. Cord blood donation to the Singapore Cord Blood Bank has the potential to give someone in need of a Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant, a chance for survival.
The sources of Haematopoietic Stem Cell or blood stem cells for transplant include bone marrow, mobilised peripheral blood and umbilical cord blood.
Singapore Cord Blood Bank - A life-saving national resource
The Singapore Cord Blood Bank (SCBB) is Singapore's only Public Cord Blood Bank. It was officially opened in September 2005 and was set up in response to the demand for unrelated donor cord blood for blood stem cell transplants, also known as Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplants, by Haematologists and Paediatricians in Singapore.
In order to protect the health of immune-compromised patients receiving cord blood for HSCT, only cord blood units of the highest safety and quality are stored and listed in SCBB's Cord Blood Inventory.
The non-profit Public Cord Blood Bank has over 14,000 clinical quality cord blood units in its Public Cord Blood Inventory and has facilitated over 245 cord blood transplants in Singapore and around the world as of 31 December 2019.
