Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disorders that affect the entire nervous system including the brain, spinal column, spinal cord and extra-cranial cerbrovascular system.
Under the SingHealth Group, the specialty is offered by National Neuroscience Institute (NNI), Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH).
NNI trains many of the practising neurosurgeons in Singapore and remains the largest in Singapore in terms of number of neurosurgeons, patient load and surgical procedures performed. It provides neurosurgery services in SingHealth through SGH.
Changi General Hospital (CGH) and NNI have collaborated to provide neuroscience services for patients in the eastern region via NNI Neuroscience Clinic @CGH.
KKH provides comprehensive cover for children with congenital and acquired conditions.
Traditional imaging and scans present anatomical structures in 2-Dimensional (2-D) fashion, hence the need for a Virtual Reality platform to provide 3-D appreciation of structures.
In medicine and especially neurosurgery virtual-reality methods are used for education, surgical planning and simulation on a virtual patient.
Minimally invasive surgery in neurosurgery can be used to diagnose and treat neurological conditions such as brain tumours, hydrocephalus (abnormal buildup of fluid in the brain) and movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease.
