Presbyopia (Lao Hua) is an age-related condition in which a person is unable to focus on near objects. Presbyopia is a normal natural ageing process of the eye and usually begins at around 40 years old.
The loss of the ability to focus on near objects results in you having to hold your smartphone and reading material (such as books, magazines or newspapers) further from your eyes to see them clearly.
Presbyopia occurs when the natural lens in the eye loses its elasticity and ability to change shape as a person gets older. The loss of elasticity in the lens makes it less able to focus light accurately when looking at near objects.
Presbyopia can be corrected with special spectacle lenses called bifocals, to help correct the condition and any other existing refractive errors such as myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness) or astigmatism.
