Ovarian Cancer - How to prevent?

While there is no known way to prevent epithelial ovarian cancer, but research has shown that these things may lower a woman’s chance of getting it:

  • Healthy diet and exercise, staying at a healthy weight.

  • Oral contraception (birth control pills) for five or more years: This has to be balanced against the slight increase in risk of breast cancer. Discuss with your doctor if this is appropriate for you.

  • Having given birth.

  • Breastfeeding.

  • Tubal ligation or surgical removal of the uterus (hysterectomy): These are usually performed for medical reasons and not specifically to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer.

  • Risk-reducing surgery for individuals with BRCA gene mutations: This involves removal of the fallopian tubes and ovaries.

Some of the above measures are easily achievable but some involve surgery and/or carry serious risks/side effects and cannot be recommended for every woman. If you are concerned, discuss with your doctor about appropriate ways to reduce your risk of ovarian cancer.
