Sengkang General and Community Hospitals were recently officially launched by PM Lee Hsien Loong, bringing quality healthcare closer to home for those living in the northeast. In a two-part series, we check out some lesser known corners of the latest addition to the SingHealth family.
First, we poke our nose around Sengkang Community Hospital (SKCH) and cosy up in some of their healing corners.
Community Library @ Sengkang Community Hospital

Exercise isn’t the only way for a patient to get better; a healthy mind is as important as a healthy body! Located conveniently inside the Patient Service Centre (PSC) is a well-stocked community library, with a wide range of books to help nurture the recovering patient’s soul. From health guides and tips to fiction novels, there are around 2,000 books available for patients, caregivers and staff to browse. This library is a collaboration between SingHealth Community Hospitals and the National Library Board, which sees the shelves regularly restocked with books donated from the regional library at Sengkang.
Apart from housing the Community Library, the PSC is a one-stop-shop that provides a seamless and well-coordinated experience for patients and caregivers. The Patient Service Associates at the business office counter offer ready help and advice on financial matters. Counselling rooms are also available for financial counselling and case management. In addition, SKCH’s community partners are also invited to share the space at the PSC. For example, AMKFSC Community Services – the cluster operator for social services in Sengkang – is based at the PSC on a satellite basis and its staff are present two times a week. The AICare Link, manned by staff from the Agency for Integrated Care, helps to connect patients and caregivers to community caregiving and social services.
Wellness Garden

Patients in Sengkang Community Hospital require sub-acute, rehabilitative or palliative care, and are usually transferred from a general hospital. Having been in a ward for the bulk of their stay so far, the team at SKCH realises the need for them to be up and about, and to literally go smell the roses of life! With access from the ward, the Wellness Garden offers patients an opportunity to energise themselves with a burst of sunlight and take in the sights of the neighbouring HDB blocks. Accompanied by healthcare professionals, they can take a stroll around the garden. With the sky as their roof, the garden is a healing space that aims to raise patients’ spirits just as high!
