NEW EASTERN GENERAL HOSPITAL (EGH) CAMPUS UNVEILS SMART HOSPITAL ROADMAP TO TRANSFORM CARE AND OPERATIONS

The EGH Campus Smart Hospital Roadmap is anchored on three key pillars – Smart Care, Smart Operations and Smart Infrastructure.

Singapore, 7 March 2026 – The Eastern General and Community Hospitals, collectively known as the Eastern General Hospital (EGH) Campus, unveiled its Smart Hospital Roadmap today. Built on three key pillars – Smart Care, Smart Operations, and Smart Infrastructure – the roadmap details how technology and digital innovation will be thoughtfully integrated to enhance care delivery, strengthen operational resilience and future-proof healthcare through intelligent systems and infrastructure.

Mr Tan Kiat How, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Digital Development and Information & Ministry of Health, unveiled the roadmap at the EGH Campus Health Fest today.

Smart care for Better Healthcare
Smart Care focuses on improving patient outcomes and experiences through technology and innovations to support clinical decisions, enable timely clinical interventions, and deliver more personalised care. As the EGH Campus is currently under development, a key priority of Smart Care is to extend care beyond the hospital setting through virtual healthcare services.

EGH has started serving patients through SingHealth@Home, SingHealth’s Mobile Inpatient Care (MIC)@Home programme. Under the programme, EGH augments Changi General Hospital (CGH)’s virtual hospital beds and treats patients with acute, stable medical conditions, who would otherwise require in-hospital stay, in the comfort of their homes. EGH medical specialists are also running Virtual Professional Consultation (VPC) with primary care doctors to enhance care planning and clinical decision-making for complex or specialised cases in the community. The EGH team is currently running VPC across seven medical specialties, including cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, renal medicine and respiratory medicine.

Starting this year, EGH has embarked on a telehealth collaboration pilot with Vanguard Healthcare, where EGH's specialists support medical teams across Vanguard Healthcare’s five nursing homes by advising on clinical conditions in nursing home residents. The specialists offer expert guidance, support clinical decision-making and enhance the management of medical conditions within nursing homes to reduce unnecessary hospital visits. The collaboration seeks to foster clinical exchanges between the hospital and nursing home providers, as well as jointly improve care outcomes for the nursing home residents while enhancing their comfort, dignity, and quality of life.

To bolster virtual healthcare services, the EGH Campus team is developing new innovations such as remote monitoring devices. One example is a programmable smartwatch designed to support patients undergoing home-based prehabilitation (the process of preparing patients physically or functionally before a treatment or surgery) and rehabilitation programmes.

Smart Operations for Greater Efficiency and Optimised Resources
Smart Operations aims to streamline processes, optimise resources and extend workforce capacity through digitalisation, robotics, automation and artificial intelligence. Technology will work behind the scenes to keep the EGH Campus running smoothly and efficiently, and enable healthcare professionals to spend time on what matters most – patient care.

One initiative is an AI-powered referral system that supports patient transfers between care settings within the campus, such as from acute to community hospital care. Developed by SingHealth Community Hospitals (SCH), which oversees Eastern Community Hospital (ECH), the system will leverage the power of AI to accurately evaluate patients’ medical eligibility and recommend appropriate transfers, a triaging process currently performed manually. It enables clinical teams to reduce manual assessments and may save more than 170 manhours each month.

Smart Infrastructure: Building Tomorrow's Healthcare Environment
Smart Infrastructure underpins the EGH Campus’ smart hospital efforts with a digitally enabled physical environment and technological systems. As a new hospital campus, EGH Campus has the advantage of embedding smart solutions within its facilities and systems from the onset. This would include smart and sustainable features that support advanced healthcare delivery such as real-time location systems to track equipment, staff deployment and patient flow; and flexible room designs that allow spaces to be easily reconfigured as care needs evolve.

To build a healing and therapeutic environment, EGH Campus is partnering with Mandai X, the growth acceleration and venture building arm of Mandai Wildlife Group, to co-create “phygital” (physical and digital) healing nodes and therapeutic spaces across the hospital campus. These spaces immerse users in nature through a mix of real and digital greenery and fauna, complemented by soothing soundscapes that evoke the calm and rhythm of natural environments. This first-of-its-kind partnership seeks to enhance mood regulation and psychosocial healing in patients, caregivers and staff amid the busyness of a hospital campus.

“As Singapore progresses towards a super-aged society, the hospitals of tomorrow must be both high-tech and high-touch. Smart clinical systems will drive care beyond reactive, to be predictive, personalised and continuous. Smart operational and infrastructural systems free clinicians to focus on what matters most – dignity, compassion and human connection,” said Associate Professor Gan Wee Hoe, Pro Tem CEO, EGH and CEO, SCH. “Technology is not the headline. Safer and more personalised care, better outcomes, and empowered patients are,” he said.

The EGH Campus Health Fest, a community healthcare event held at Bedok Town Square, is expected to draw more than 2,000 healthcare professionals, industry partners, community stakeholders and members of the public in attendance.
