​"As the lead surgeon, before any procedures, I always make sure that the team adheres to safe ophthalmic surgical practices which include handling sharps. In dealing with an area as delicate as the eye, I always emphasise to the team that everyone must be fully aware and present before, during and after a surgery. We may have done certain procedures many times such that it becomes routine, but every patient is different. That is why we can all save lives by being mindful and not complacent.
