Pamidronate

What is Pamidronate for?

Pamidronate is usually used to treat high blood levels of calcium caused by cancer. It can also be used to reduce bone loss caused by certain types of cancer or prevent bone-related events such as fractures and bone pain in patients with cancer spreads to the bone.
It slows down the breakdown of bone by reducing the activity of cells called osteoclasts.

How should I take or use Pamidronate?

Pamidronate is given as an injection into your vein (intravenous)

What precautions should I take when taking or using Pamidronate?

Inform your healthcare professional if: 

• You are allergic to this medication or any of the other ingredients of this medication
• You are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
• You are breastfeeding
• You are taking any other medications, including supplements, traditional medications, and herbal remedies
• You require any dental treatment/procedure

What are some common side effects of Pamidronate?

• Muscle aches and joint pain
  • Mild pain may be relieved by taking paracetamol
• Flu-like symptoms (fever, headache, fatigue)
  • Mild headaches and fever may be relieved by taking paracetamol
  • Do not drive a car or operate machinery if you are feeling tired
  • Seek medical attention if symptoms persist or temperature 38 degree celsius or higher
• Nausea and vomiting
  • Take small, frequent meals and avoid foods with smells that may cause nausea
  • Take medications for nausea or vomiting if prescribed 
     

What are some rare but serious side effects that I need to seek medical advice immediately?

• Allergic reactions. Please alert your healthcare professional if you experience this during your treatment.
• The symptoms of a drug allergy include one or more of the following:
  • Swollen face/eyes/lips/tongue
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Itchy skin rashes over your whole body
• Loose teeth, mouth sores, pain or swelling in jaw
• New or unusual pain in groin, hip or thigh
• Low blood levels of calcium: Muscle cramps, spasm and twitches, numbness and tingling of finger and toes, risk of seizures
• Muscle aches and joint pain that is not relieved by paracetamol

If you experience any of these symptoms, you should stop your medication and see your healthcare professional immediately.
