What is Metronidazole Gel for?

How should I take or use Metronidazole Gel?

  • Use this medication as recommended by your healthcare professional. Consult your healthcare professional if you are not sure how to use this medication correctly.
  • Areas to be treated should be cleansed and dried before application of the gel.
  • Apply and rub in a thin film of gel to the affected areas, as specified by your healthcare professional.
  • Patients may use cosmetics after waiting for at least 5 minutes following application. to allow the medication to dry.
  • Avoid contact of the gel with eyes as it may cause eye irritation.

What should I do if I forget to take or use Metronidazole Gel?

If you forget to use the medication, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next application, only apply the usual amount. Do not double the amount of gel or apply extra medication to make up for the missed application.

What precautions should I take when taking or using Metronidazole Gel?

Inform your healthcare professional if: 

  • You are allergic to metronidazole or any of the other ingredients of this medication
  • You have any blood-related medical conditions
  • Local irritation occurs after using the gel

What food or medication should I avoid when I take or use Metronidazole Gel?

Side Effects


What are some common side effects of Metronidazole Gel?

  • Irritation, dryness or redness of the skin
  • Tearing or burning sensation of the eyes

You may be advised to use the medication less frequently, or discontinue use temporarily, or discontinue use until further instructions, if the side effects occur. Check with your healthcare professional on the advice for your situation.

What are some rare but serious side effects that I need to seek medical advice immediately?

The symptoms of a drug allergy include one or more of the following: 

  • Swollen face/eyes/lips/tongue
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Itchy skin rashes over your whole body

If you experience any of these symptoms, you should stop your medication and see your healthcare professional immediately.

How should I store Metronidazole Gel?

Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep this medication away from children.

How do I throw away Metronidazole Gel safely?

Pack the medication into a bag and bring it back to the pharmacy where you received the medication from.
