What is Methotrexate Injection for?

Methotrexate Injection is a chemotherapy drug used to treat certain types of cancer. 


Side Effects


What are some common side effects of Methotrexate Injection?

Early side effects

  • Mild nausea, vomiting or appetite loss may be experienced
    There are medications available, which may prevent or decrease these side effects. If you are given these medications, take them as directed.

Delayed side effects

  • A drop in the blood counts may occur 4 to 10 days after treatment
  • Mouth ulcers may occur
  • Diarrhea may occur
  • Tiredness and drowsiness may occur
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight may occur. Rashes may occur with excessive exposure to the sun. 
    Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight. The use of a sunscreen and/or protective clothing may be helpful.

Please seek medical attention if any of the following occurs:

  • Fever of 38°C or higher
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding, such as passing of black tarry stools, dark urine or vomiting of blood
  • Severe sore throat, hoarseness or mouth sores
  • Severe nausea and vomiting that persist for more than 3 days
  • Severe diarrhea (more than 4 times a day)
  • Persistent dry cough or shortness of breath
  • Severe headache, confusion, blurred vision, slurred speech or seizures
