It is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), a non-cancerous growth of the prostate gland, caused by overproduction of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone. It lowers dihydrotestosterone, and thus shrinks the prostate and relieves the symptoms. This medication is for use in men only. It may take up to 6 months or more for you to notice an effect.
As the prostate enlarges, it can lead to urinary problems such as difficulty in passing urine and frequent visits to the toilet. It can also cause the flow of urine to be slower and weaker. If left untreated, there is a risk that the urine flow may be completely blocked (acute urinary retention) and this requires immediate medical treatment.
Finasteride can also be used to treat male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia).
In the scalp, a male hormone (dihydrotestosterone), is also the major cause of male pattern hair loss. By lowering dihydrotestosterone, finasteride helps to slow the balding process, preventing further hair loss, and leading to increased hair growth in some patients.
The improvement rate varies from person to person; it usually occurs after the medication has been used for at least 3 months and lasts only as long as the medication continues to be used. Hair loss will begin again within 3 to 6 months after stopping the medication.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember if it is not close to the next dose. Otherwise, you should skip the dose and take the next dose at the usual time. Do not take two doses together to make up for the missed dose.
