Uses


What is Eltrombopag for?

Eltrombopag is used to raise platelet counts. It can be used to treat immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and aplastic anemia.

How should I take or use Eltrombopag?

  • Take on an empty stomach. Take 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals
  • Take this drug at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after antacids, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Aluminum, Selenium or Zinc supplements or foods high in calcium such as dairy products
  • Swallow whole, Do not chew, break or crush

What should I do if I forget to take or use Eltrombopag?

Skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time

Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses


Precaution


What precautions should I take when taking or using Eltrombopag?

  1. You should not take eltrombopag if you are pregnant unless recommended by the doctor. Inform your doctor if you think you are pregnant or are planning to becoming pregnant.
  2. You should not breast-feed while taking eltrombopag. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breast feed.

What food or medication should I avoid when I take or use Eltrombopag?

Inform your doctor if you are taking any traditional medications or supplements.


Side Effects


What are some common side effects of Eltrombopag?

  1. Fatigue, Headache, Insomnia, Chills
  2. Itch
  3. Abnormal liver function test
  4. Diarrhea, Nausea, Abdominal pain
  5. Blood clots (<10%)
  6. Cataract (<10%)

Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:

  1. Sign of an allergic reaction e.g. rash, itching, swollen, trouble breathing.
  2. Sign of urinary tract infection (UTI) like blood in the urine, pain when passing urine, urinary urgency.
  3. Weakness on 1 side of the body, trouble speaking or thinking, change in balance, drooping on one side of the face, or blurred eyesight.
  4. Signs of liver problems such as dark urine, feeling tired, not hungry, upset stomach or stomach pain, light-coloured stools, throwing up, or yellow skin or eyes.
  5. Signs of a blood clot such as chest pain, coughing up blood; shortness of breath; swelling, warmth numbness in the leg/arm.

How should I store Eltrombopag?

  • Keep away from children
  • Keep in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight
  • Store at room temperature
