Uses


What is Chlorhexidine for?

Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic that is used as mouthwash for sore throat, mouth ulcers or oral hygiene. It can also be used for minor skin infections, or remove the presence of a resistant bacteria species, such as MRSA (methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus), and to clean the skin before a surgery.

How should I take or use Chlorhexidine?

  • For use as mouthwash or gargle, follow the instructions provided. Gargle for 30 seconds each time and do not swallow.
  • For use in irrigation (cleansing) and skin disinfection for general wound care, follow the instructions provided. For external use only. Keep out of eyes, ears and mouth.
  • For skin preparation before surgery, do follow instructions provided by the hospital to reduce the chances of an infection when using it as a soap substitute or wash.
  • Cream used to apply on wounds and prevent skin infections, apply a thin layer of the cream over the affected area. For external use only. Keep out of eyes, ears and mouth.

What should I do if I forget to take or use Chlorhexidine?

If you forget to take or use a dose, take or use it as soon as you remember. Then take or use your next dose at the usual time. Do not take or use two doses to make up for the missed dose.

What precautions should I take when taking or using Chlorhexidine?

Inform your healthcare professional if:

  • You are allergic to this medication or any of the other ingredients found in the medication
  • You are allergic to alcohol as some products may contain alcohol

What food or medication should I avoid when I take or use Chlorhexidine?

If using it as a mouthwash or gargle, avoid eating for at least 30 minutes afterwards.


Side Effects


What are some common side effects of Chlorhexidine?

For use as mouthwash or gargle;

  • If swallowed in excessive amounts, it may cause stomach discomfort
  • Changes in taste
  • Toothaches and tooth discolouration
  • Brush your teeth regularly or visit your dentist to remove these stains

For use as topical (skin application);

  • Skin reaction such as redness and irritation
  • Try using a smaller amount or stop using the cream

What are some rare but serious side effects that I need to seek medical advice immediately?

The symptoms of a drug allergy include one or more of the following:

  • Swollen face/eyes/lips/tongue
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Itchy skin rashes over your whole body

If you experience any of these symptoms, you should stop your medication and see your healthcare professional immediately.

How should I store Chlorhexidine?

Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep this medication away from children.

How do I throw away Chlorhexidine safely?

Pack this medication into a black trash bag and seal it tightly before throwing it into the rubbish chute or bin.
