It is exciting to be rotated to the SingHealth Community Hospitals (SCH), where I get first-hand exposure to the challenges and dynamics of starting up new community hospitals. Given SCH’s startup nature, I am given plenty of opportunities to support cross-departmental functions outside of my primary job scope in Performance Management and Management Information. For example, I have been involved in developing IT systems, mapping clinical and operational workflows, assisting management’s communications with staff, and other operational imperatives. The HME programme allows me to gain and internalise new work experiences through structured core and elective modules that cover a comprehensive range of healthcare topics and clinical operations. This is very important and useful for the formative stages of my career. The programme equips its executives with the skills and knowledge needed to contribute meaningfully towards creating a person-centred healthcare experience.

Facing the immense scale and complexity of hospital operations at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH), I wanted to learn as much as I could and from as many areas of expertise as possible. The HME programme’s structured learning scheme and rotational style of deployment helped me to meet and learn from many different subject matter experts across the hospital. For example, my first rotation posting as a Quality Improvement and Process Transformation specialist gave me the chance to dabble in a range of complex yet fascinating projects. This included simulation modelling for outpatient pharmacy operations, data analytics and process transformation for hearing centre services, as well as streamlining operations for the renal dialysis centre.
