I am the future of Nursing

Synonym(s):

Siti Nur I’faaf Binte Mohd Amin, Senior Staff Nurse, Singapore General Hospital

Being a nurse in the fast-paced world of the Neuroscience ICU means that every moment counts. On a day-to-day basis, I manage complex equipment and conduct detailed assessments that guide critical care and interventions.

What makes my role unique is that I also wear another hat – as a research nurse, I get to be part of studies that shape the future of healthcare. The drive to bridge the gap between problems and practical solutions motivated me to pursue this track.

One of the proudest moments of my career was receiving the Young Scientist Award at the SingHealth Duke-NUS Scientific Congress 2023. It showed me that nurses are truly changemakers.  We're more than just caregivers - we're skilled innovators turning our frontline insights and experiences into solutions that transform patient care. This has only deepened my commitment to advancing evidence-based practice and pushing boundaries. I hope I can inspire others in the nursing profession to embrace research too!

Nurses Day 2025 CGH

Mardianah Binti Ishak, Senior Nurse Manager, Changi General Hospital

I want to be able to care for and support people at their most vulnerable moments. This led me to work in the high-acuity wards at Changi General Hospital where I oversee and mentor the teams running two intensive care units and two high-dependency units.

The environment in the high-acuity wards is often intense and fast-paced, and I am thankful and proud to be part of a dedicated and skilled team that works tirelessly to save lives. Leadership, to me, is creating an environment and culture where teammates are empowered, and supported to grow and excel. I believe in open communication, meaningful engagement, and shared responsibility, where everyone feels valued and contributes their best. It is incredible to see how a supportive culture can enhance patient care and create joy at work.

Though the days are sometimes tiring, the rewards are immense when you know that as a team, your collective effort helps patients get through difficult times in their lives.

Nurses Day 2025 SKH

Gerald Tay, Staff Nurse, Sengkang General Hospital

As a specialised nurse in Interventional Radiology, I assist in minimally invasive image-guided procedures, working closely with interventional radiologists and various healthcare teams. Our role is crucial in patient care before, during and after their procedure. What makes each day exciting is that no two cases are exactly alike, offering constant opportunities to learn and grow.

The most meaningful aspects of my role come from the connections we build with our patients. There are patients who return regularly for procedures like drainage catheter changes every few months, and some of them are under palliative care. I've been deeply touched through my interactions with them – being a first-hand witness to their gratitude, perseverance and joy gives me a different perspective of life.

Not everyday is smooth sailing but I always remind myself to remain calm and focus on the patient. I want to give them the care to live the rest of their lives well.

Nurses Day 2025 KKH

Brenda Kelly Pereira, Staff Nurse, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital

In KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, I provide nursing care for both mothers and their precious newborns. From monitoring vital signs and supporting breastfeeding to educating new parents on baby care, every day provides me with a chance to make a difference. It's incredibly fulfilling to guide mothers through their postnatal journey, helping them gain confidence in caring for themselves and their little ones.

Sometime back, I was caring for a patient going through a challenging period, and I wanted to provide the best support for her and her family. During her stay, we heard a family member calling for help as she was having breathing difficulties and showing self-harm behaviour. I activated the hospital emergency alert system, and the team responded immediately. Through our timely interventions, we were able to stabilise her condition.

I hold this memory close to my heart because it reminded me that I am never alone – we are truly better and stronger, together, for our patients!

Nurses Day 2025 OCH

Karuppannan Prabhagaran, Senior Staff Nurse, Outram Community Hospital

In our combined Renal and Rehabilitation ward, we support patients on their journey to independence. I take on various roles and hold many responsibilities such as nursing duties, supporting mobility training with the rehab team, educating patients and caregivers on managing their conditions, and more. Overall, I aim to create a supportive and goal-oriented environment that will motivate patients, while ensuring their safety, comfort and dignity through the recovery process. I hope that as they recover, they can regain not just their abilities but confidence as well.

In the near future, I hope to further develop my expertise in sub-acute care by deepening my knowledge in inpatient rehabilitation and advanced clinical practices. With the foundation I have built through pursuing advanced certifications, I would like to focus on improving patient outcomes through evidence-based care.

I also hope to take on leadership roles within the team, contributing to mentorship and inspiring the next generations of nurses to come!

Nurses Day 2025 SKCH

Tan Hui Ting, Staff Nurse, Sengkang Community Hospital

After graduation, I was assigned to the palliative ward, where my role focuses on managing patients' symptoms, particularly pain control, to ensure their comfort during life's final journey whilst maintaining their quality of life.

One particularly memorable experience involved an elderly couple in our ward – the husband receiving palliative care whilst his wife was undergoing rehabilitation. Despite her own health challenges, she remained steadfastly by his side. During a poignant conversation as his condition deteriorated, she confided in me about her heartbreak yet expressed her unwavering belief in their eternal love. Their story of enduring devotion, especially as they navigated life's final chapter together, reinforced my understanding that our role transcends mere medical care – it’s about honouring the profound human connections that give life its deepest meaning.

Looking to the future, I aspire to extend palliative care services into patients' homes. This transition would enable us to provide more personalised and compassionate care, better supporting both patients and their families in familiar, comfortable surroundings.

Nurses Day 2025 NCCS

Thet Myat Noe, Senior Staff Nurse, National Cancer Centre Singapore

As an Oncologic Imaging Nurse at National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS), I find joy in bringing both technical precision and compassion to my work. My days are filled with coordinating imaging procedures, administering contrast media, and assisting in breast biopsies. Beyond these technical aspects, I also ensure that my patients feel supported and understood throughout their journey.

I chose oncology because I wanted to be there for patients during their most challenging moments - from those first crucial scans to the ones that show their progress towards healing. To me, every day is a learning opportunity, whether it's developing greater empathy for patients or enhancing my clinical expertise through training and mentorship.

When circumstances became increasingly demanding, I'm grateful for my team - we support one another, problem-solve together, and find strength in our unity. I hope to deepen my expertise in oncology nursing, possibly pursuing advanced practice. I'm also passionate about sharing our nursing stories because I believe what we do matters, even in the quiet moments behind the scenes.

Whether I'm scrubbing in for surgery, coordinating with our team, or assisting with anaesthesia, each role allows me to make a meaningful difference in patient care.

What captivates me about oral and maxillofacial surgery is how we can transform not just a patient's physical function, but their confidence and quality of life. The intricate nature of facial surgery and the variety of cases we handle - from trauma to congenital conditions - keeps me constantly learning and growing.

Embarking on a new leadership role, I'm passionate about nurturing a supportive environment where our team can thrive and meet challenges with optimism and collective strength. Looking ahead, I'm also excited to further my studies so that I can expand my scope of practice and provide more specialised care to patients!

Kimbell Tan Jee Song, Senior Staff Nurse, National Heart Centre Singapore

To me, innovation in nursing isn't just about solving problems, it's about reimagining possibilities. As a Senior Staff Nurse at the National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS) supporting nursing innovation, I find joy in turning our nurses' daily challenges into opportunities for transformation.

My journey began at the bedside, where I experienced firsthand how systems and processes could impact nursing care. Those experiences sparked a determination in me to create change and to give our nurses back what matters most - time with patients. Now, each day brings new chances to collaborate with our nurses, understanding their challenges and crafting solutions that make a real difference in their work lives.

The future of healthcare excites me, especially as we explore the potential of artificial intelligence and data analytics. I believe that at the heart of every innovation project lies a simple truth: when we make processes smoother for our nurses, we enhance the care our patients receive. That's the kind of meaningful change that keeps me passionate about what I do.

Working with patients who face complex neurological conditions has taught me the true meaning of resilience. Together with our dedicated team of doctors and allied health professionals, I help guide our patients from their most vulnerable moments through to their triumphant steps towards recovery.

What truly warms my heart is not just witnessing these remarkable recovery journeys, but also mentoring the next generation of APNs, passing on the same supportive guidance that my seniors once showed me. The strong bonds I've built with my colleagues at NNI make every challenging day worthwhile.
