Profile

Assoc Prof Daniel Ting is a senior consultant vitreo-retinal surgeon with the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) and concurrently, Associate Professor, SingHealth Duke-NUS Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences Academic Clinical Programme (ACP) and Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor and an Innovation Mentor at Stanford University.

He is also the Director of Singapore Health Service (SingHealth) AI Office, SNEC Chief Data and Digital Officer, and Head of AI and Digital Innovation in Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI). After graduating as the SingHealth Valedictorian across all specialties, he was awarded the US-ASEAN J. William Fulbright Scholarship to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Applied Physics Laboratory to pursue the use of artificial intelligence, big data analytics and telemedicine in the field of ophthalmology. 

Assoc Prof Ting is trained in cataract and retina surgery, having undergone local and international surgical fellowship in SNEC, Wilmer Eye Institute at the Johns Hopkins University in the US and Moorfields Eye Hospital in UK.

Assoc Prof Ting consults complex eye and retina conditions, and also performs comprehensive and complex cataract and vitreo-retinal surgeries, such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye conditions, retinal detachment, macular surgeries for epiretinal membrane, vitreo-macular retinal diseases, myopia-related retinal complications, etc. He is an expert in utilising AI and digital technology for both diagnostic and therapeutic domains in ophthalmology to achieve optimum clinical outcomes for patients. 

Assoc Prof Ting has excelled in clinical, surgical, research and leadership abilities since his residency. He maintained 1st place nationally in the Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment Program-International (OKAPI), a US-based exam, for 3 consecutive years from 2012 to 2014. In 2013, he was awarded the UK FRCOphth McCartney Prize, which is conferred to the world’s highest score in ophthalmic pathology.

He also received a total of 10 awards throughout his residency, including the inaugural SNEC Richard Fan Gold Medal Award, SingHealth RISE Awards for being Outstanding Resident, Young Inspiring Resident, Intermediate Training Examination, Young Educator Award and Outstanding SingHealth Residents’ Committee. As part of the National Health Care Leadership College/ Ministry of Health initiative to nurture future health care leaders in Singapore, he was selected as the inaugural SingHealth Ophthalmology Chief Resident to join the Singapore National Chief Residency Program in 2015, and was subsequently awarded the Outstanding Chief Resident Award in 2016. 

To date, Assoc Prof Ting has published over 250 publications in peer reviewed journals, book chapters, educational articles and conference abstracts in high impact journals such as JAMA, NEJM, Lancet, Nature Medicine, Nature Biomedical Engineering, Lancet Digital Health, Progress in Retinal and Eye Research, Diabetes Care, Nature Digital Medicine, Ophthalmology, etc. Assoc Prof Ting serves in several leadership positions at the eye and AI societies, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology AI and Retina Ophthalmology Technology Assessment committees. He also chairs the AI and Digital Innovation Standing Committee for the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology and Asia-Pacific Vitreo-Retinal Society. He serves on   numerous advisory and editorial boards in the top-tiered digital and medical journals, including Lancet Digital Health, Frontiers in Medicine, Frontiers in Digital Health and Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology; Section Editor in British Journal of Ophthalmology and Editorial Board Member in Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology Retina, Ophthalmology Science, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology and Retina. 

Assoc Prof Ting has won a number of scientific awards conferred by international AI and ophthalmology societies, including Tatler Asia Gen T Award (2021), Singapore National Clinician Scientist Award (2021), Asia-Pacific Academy Ophthalmology (APAO) Nakajima Award (2021), Asia-Pacific Vitreo-Retinal Society (APVRS) Ian Constable Award (2021), MICCAI OMIA Prestigious Achievement Award (2020), ARVO Bert Glaser Award for Innovative Research in Retina (2020), USA Macula Society Evangelos Gragoudas Award (2019), APAO Young Ophthalmologist’s Award (2018) and APTOS Young Innovator Award (2017). Worldwide, he is ranked the top AI and retinal expert by the Expertscape (2021 to 2023), Stanford University World’s Top 2% Scientists (2021 to 2023) and Top 100 Ophthalmologists Power List by the Ophthalmologists (2021 to 2024).
