Profile
Dr Tyler Hyungtaek Rim is currently a Clinician Scientist in Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) and Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC). He obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree in 2006 and specialist accreditation in Ophthalmology in 2014 from South Korea. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea.
As a severance-trained vitreoretinal surgeon, Dr Rim taught the latest minimal-invasive vitrectomy techniques and complex cataract management between 2016 and 2019 before relocating to Singapore. His research area is focused on data science, including conventional statistics, epidemiology, big data analytics, and machine learning in the field of ophthalmology.
He has published more than fifty scientific papers including those published in The Lancet Digital Health, NPJ digital medicine, Ophthalmology, JAMA Ophthalmology, Stroke, Journal of Hypertension, and International Journal of Cardiology, as the first or a corresponding author. He is a co-founder of a medical artificial intelligence startup, Medi Whale Inc., where he and his team developed an automated reading system of retinal photographs and an algorithm for prediction of coronary artery calcium score based on retinal images via deep learning.
