Ms Peh Hui Yee

Ms Peh Hui Yee is a Dietitian at Singapore General Hospital. She received a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Honours) from Flinders University of South Australia. She is a Certified Nutrition Support Clinician with the National Board of Nutrition Certification, USA and a member of the Dietetics Association of Australia.

Hui Yee has special interest in nutrition support and surgical oncology. Her main clinical responsibilities include provision of medical nutrition therapy to surgical patients and all patients who require parenteral nutrition. She works very closely with other healthcare professionals in managing head and neck cancer patients’ nutritional needs throughout their treatment journey. In early 2017, Hui Yee completed a two-month advanced clinical nutrition training at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in the United States through a team-based Health Manpower Development Plan in the area of head and neck surgery management. Hui Yee not only contributes actively to the Head and Neck Cancer Surgery and Nutrition Support Services multi-disciplinary teams, she also participates in the development of care process models for the head and neck cancer surgery patients.

Abstract  :  Head and neck cancer patients face unique challenges in maintaining adequate nutrition. Both the disease and its treatment can significantly impact on upper aerodigestive tract anatomy and/or function, resulting in difficulty and pain during chewing and swallowing. This, in turn, affects the patients’ ability to obtain adequate nutrition orally and results in weight loss and malnutrition. Insufficient or unsafe nutrition intake can have profound impact on wound healing, infection risks, treatment outcomes and quality of life. We will discuss swallowing and nutritional management throughout the head and neck cancer journey, and how the synergistic work of speech and language therapists and dietitians can help patients maximise their nutritional intake and optimise overall nutritional status.
