Keeping it Above Board

Leow Boon Hwi, Senior Manager, Centralised Institutional Review Board, SingHealth

Meet Leow Boon Hwi.

She is from the SingHealth Centralised Institutional Review Board (CIRB).

What is that, you asked?

The SingHealth Centralised Institutional Review Board (CIRB) has an important responsibility, which is to ensure the protection of the rights, safety, and well-being of human subjects involved in research studies at SingHealth institutions. As the Secretariat for one of the six Boards under the CIRB, Boon Hwi supports the work of the CIRB.

Wow! Sounds challenging!

The field of research ethics is constantly evolving to keep pace with changes in medical research techniques, ethical guidelines and safety regulations. Boon Hwi has to keep herself up to date on the latest developments in the field. But it is a challenge she welcomes.

Boon Hwi would diligently read up on the latest developments in research and the ethical conduct of research. She also attends overseas conferences where she exchanged ideas on topics including ethical, administrative, and compliance issues governing research.

“At such conferences, I learn from overseas experts and have a chance to consider complex, challenging, and current issues in the conduct of ethical research. I am reminded to consider potential issues when evaluating a research proposal and that the research participants’ informed consent documents are written in lay language where possible. This is in line with our pursuit of ethical research involving human research participants,” she said.
