In his 20-year journey with SingHealth, Dr Luke Toh, Senior Consultant at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital’s (KKH) Diagnostic & Interventional Imaging department, has crossed paths with many patients who have left a deep impression on him. One of them was a Malaysian toddler who had a complex lymphatic malformation on her neck. She had been on tracheostomy for the first three years and could not speak, but after she was treated, she rapidly picked up speech. On Dr Toh’s birthday, her father sent him a video of her singing happy birthday, a gesture that melted his heart.
“There have been cancer patients who have transformed from their initial bitterness to acceptance of their condition even when their disease recurred and they subsequently left us. There are also many patients who have been treated and cured who still regularly send greeting cards to us at Christmas and Lunar New Year,” he said.
Seeing their correspondence, even years after they have been treated makes Dr Toh even more inspired to continue treating children with vascular malformations at KKH.
