One of the biggest challenges for Bee Leng and her team at SHP during the SARS outbreak was the lack of information available at its onset. The virus was still relatively new and being at the frontlines meant that they had to provide accurate information and reassurance to the patients who visited the polyclinic.

“When health and travel declaration forms were subsequently introduced, some patients or visitors became agitated when we asked them questions to find out more,” she recounted.

Fortunately, with the mutual support of her colleagues, she never felt that she was alone. This rings true once again with the COVID-19 pandemic, where she is motivated by the support of her co-workers and the nation.

“Being at the frontline of the SARS outbreak in 2003 was my first glimpse at how important it is to have support from colleagues.”, she said.
