Dr Soma Subramaniam is an ENT, Head and Neck Surgeon and Consultant, providing ENT specialist care at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, Jurong Medical Centre and Jurong Community Hospital.

Dr Soma graduated from the National University of Ireland in 2002 and underwent postgraduate ENT training in Singapore from 2008 to 2014. He is qualified as an ENT surgeon, having completed both the Singapore ENT exit examinations and the intercollegiate FRCS-ORL examinations in England in 2014. He holds full medical registration and licensing with the Singapore Medical Council and Malaysian Medical Council.

After attaining the ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates USA) certification, Dr Soma received the Health Manpower Development Plan Award in 2016 to pursue a one-year clinical fellowship in the United States under the mentorship of Professor Ricardo Carrau, who is Professor and Lynne Shepard Jones Chair in Head & Neck Oncology at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Centre, James Cancer Centre & Richard Solove Research Institute. Professor Carrau is a pioneer in the field of cranio-maxillofacial surgery and a recognised world expert in endonasal endoscopic skull base surgery. During this period, Dr Soma gained valuable clinical and academic exposure to various aspects of advanced sinus-related, as well as head and neck tumour related pathology, with a special emphasis on endoscopic endonasal approaches to nasal and skull base tumours. He also had the opportunity to spend time at the dedicated ENT allergy service, gaining valuable experience in the management of patients with ENT related allergy.

Dr Soma is the Principle Consultant in charge of rhinology, sinus and allergy, as well as skull base diseases. He set up NTFGH’s multi-disciplinary skull base team with the Neurosurgery service to perform various endoscopic skull base procedures. This is in addition to providing care for patients who require primary and revision endoscopic sinus related surgery, as well as ambulatory ENT allergy diagnosis and treatment. His other areas of expertise include sialendoscopy and thyroid surgery, and was part of the ENT team that performed the first five cases of minimal-access transaxillary endoscopic thyroid surgery in NTFGH.

Besides his clinical duties, Dr Soma has also taken a keen interest in teaching and training the next generation of otolaryngologists and doctors. He was appointed as the Associate Programme Director for the NUHS Otolaryngology Residency from 2014 to 2017, and has been re-appointed this year to serve in the position till 2020. He is also a Clinical Lecturer at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.

Academically, Dr Soma has been involved in various clinical research projects, focused on sinus and skull base diseases, salivary gland disorders and nasal allergy. He has presented numerous research papers at international meetings, published papers in peer-reviewed medical journals and co-authored several book chapters in ENT textbooks.
