Dr Low Jin Rong is a Consultant in the Glaucoma Department at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC). His clinical practice includes glaucoma, cataract and comprehensive ophthalmology. He graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 2011. He subsequently trained under the American Council of Graduate Medical Education - International (ACGME-I) accredited SingHealth Ophthalmology Residency Program, and obtained his Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology in 2017. He qualified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (United Kingdom) in 2018, attained Ophthalmology Specialist accreditation and became a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore in 2019. He completed the SNEC Glaucoma Advanced Clinical Specialist Program (Fellowship) in 2021.
Dr Low was awarded the Junior Doctor Teaching Award (NUS) in 2018 and the SNEC Outstanding Educator Award in 2021 for his contributions to medical education. He is actively involved in ophthalmology training of local and overseas clinical fellows, residents, medical students, nurses and allied health professionals. As Deputy Director of Undergraduate Education, EYE ACP, Program Director of the Ophthalmology Program, Duke-NUS Medical School, and Adjunct Clinician Educator, EYE ACP, SNEC, Dr Low has led the development of the SNEC e-learning platform, enhanced the SNEC MCQ Bank, and revised the curriculum and learning objectives for the Duke-NUS Ophthalmology Program. As committee member of the Primary Eye Clinic, he has trained optometrists to be clinically proficient and supported the planning and development of the Advanced Diploma in Clinical Ophthalmology for Optometrists and the Optometry Residency Program. He is a member of the MMed (Ophth) Committee, NUS, and serves as examiner in internal MMed Examinations and Optometry Examinations. He frequently teaches residents and fellows cataract and glaucoma surgery in wet labs and operating theatres, and is a facilitator for the SNEC Basic and Advanced Ophthalmic Microsurgical Workshops. He also lectures and teaches nurses and allied health professionals at the Basic Ophthalmic Courses and the Duke-NUS SNEC Basic Certificate for Ophthalmic Assistant and Technicians Courses. He is a Mentor to several medical students under the Singapore Ophthalmology Students’ Society (SOSS) Mentorship Programme.
Dr Low received the SingHealth Award for Quality Improvement Project in 2017 for his work on reducing preparation time for examination of wheelchair patients. As the Chief Resident of SNEC and member of the SNEC Outpatient Committee (2019-2020), he provided direction and planning of resources to support quality clinical services and improve the ophthalmology residency training experience. As Clinical Director of Pharmacy Department, SNEC, Dr Low led the implementation of electronic prescription in SNEC, optimized the home delivery services of medication, and approved the use of novel therapeutic medications in SNEC. He is committed to serving the community, and regularly volunteers at community eye screening projects and gives educational talks on eye care, cataracts and glaucoma.
Dr Low is active in ophthalmic research and has published numerous scientific papers in respected peer-reviewed medical journals and presented his research work at international and local scientific conferences. He received The Japanese Ophthalmological Society International Young Investigator Award (2021). He was an invited speaker for the Young Investigator Symposium, Asia-Pacific Strabismus and Paediatric Ophthalmology Society Congress (2017), Hong Kong Paediatric Ophthalmology Congress (2017), SOSS Career in Ophthalmology Webinar (2022), and the 126th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Ophthalmological Society (2022), and invited panelist for the Global Education and Research Society of Ophthalmology: Glaucoma Meeting (2020). His research interests include the value-driven outcomes of minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and how glaucoma disease and treatments affect patients’ quality of life.
