Professor Nigel Heaton is Professor of Transplant Surgery at King's College and Consultant Surgeon at King's College Hospital. He trained in General Surgery, Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) surgery, and liver transplantation for adults and children at King's. With over 900 peer-reviewed publications in HPB and liver transplantation, he has established himself as a leading expert in the field.

Previously, Professor Heaton served as director of the liver transplant programme at King's College Hospital for more than 25 years. During this time, his unit performed over 6,000 liver transplants. His expertise encompasses adult and paediatric liver and bowel transplantation, including split, living donor, auxiliary, and donation after circulatory death (DCD) liver transplantation.

Professor Heaton also has extensive experience in adult and paediatric HPB surgery, with a particular interest in pancreatic tumours in children, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and vascular diseases of the liver. His research interests are diverse, focusing on phosphoproteomic analysis of liver cancers, ischaemia/reperfusion and mitochondria, and the management of spontaneous portosystemic shunts in liver transplantation.

Despite his numerous accomplishments, Professor Heaton continues to find joy in the challenges presented by liver surgery.
