Deferasirox - Side Effects, Precautions, and Contraindications

What side effects can Deferasirox cause?

  1. Nausea, vomiting
  2. Diarrhoea, stomach pain, bloating, constipation, indigestion
  3. Headache
  4. Rash
  5. Kidney problems
  6. Liver problems

Inform your doctor if any of the following occurs:

  1. Severe rash or difficulty breathing and dizziness, or swelling of the face and throat
  2. Severe rash, red skin, blistering of lips, eyes or mouth, skin peeling, sore throat
  3. Marked decrease in urine output
  4. Drowsiness, upper right abdominal pain, yellowing of skin or eyes and dark urine
  5. Vomiting blood or black stools
  6. Frequent abdominal pain
  7. Severe upper stomach pain (pancreatitis)
  8. Partial vision loss or decreased hearing

Before taking Deferasirox , what precautions must I follow?

Talk to your doctor before taking Desferasirox:

  1. If you have any problems with your liver or kidneys
  2. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
  3. If you are breast-feeding. Do not breast-feed while you take this drug and for 1 week after your last dose
  4. If you are taking or recently taken any other medications

What food or medicine must I avoid when I take Deferasirox ?

Tell your doctor or pharmacist the medicines you are taking including antacids (medicine used to treat heartburn), certain painkillers or anti-inflammatory medicines.
