Profile

Professor Ang graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Singapore in 1979.  He pursued specialty training in Ophthalmology at the Singapore General Hospital and received the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow, (Ophthalmology) in 1985.

He was awarded a Ministry of Health (Singapore) fellowship in post-graduate training (1989-90) at the Lion’s Eye Institute, Western Australia in the sub-specialty of Diseases of the Vitreous and Retina.

With the setting up of the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC), Professor Ang was appointed as clinical faculty from 1991 onwards.  He was head of the Vitreo-retina Department at Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) till 2000.  Prof Ang was appointed Director, SNEC from 2000 to 2008.

In 2008, Professor Ang was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Singapore General Hospital.  He concurrently held the appointment of Deputy Group CEO in Singapore Health Services.  He completed his term in 2017 and returned to full-time clinical practice in SNEC.

In 2001, Professor Ang was conferred the Fellowship ad hominem – the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Outstanding Award in recognition of his work in prevention of blindness.

Professor Ang was the Chairman of the Specialist Training Committee (STC) for Ophthalmology (Ministry of Health) from 2001 to 2010 and Chairman of the Resident Advisory Committee (RAC) for Ophthalmology from 2010 to 2013.  He still serves as a Committee Member in the RAC (Ophthalmology). 

Professor Ang is an Examiner for the M Med (Ophthalmology), FAMS (Ophthalmology) and appointed as Examiner for the FRCOphth (UK) in 2017.
