How Ubiquitination Controls the Function of Membrane Proteins
Abstract
Ubiquitination is a common protein modification process that is essential for the normal functioning of the cell. This seminar will discuss how ubiquitination regulates membrane proteins, such as the signaling receptors, ions channels and transporters, and the pathophysiological consequences of such a regulatory system. Data will be presented on the role of ubiquitination in iron and salt homeostasis, and in disease. The seminar should be of interest to a wide audience in biomedical sciences, biochemistry, cell biology and physiology.
Biography
Sharad is a NHMRC Level 3 Investigator and holds a Bradley Distinguished Professorship and the Chair of Cancer Biology at the University of South Australia. He is the co-founder (Co-Director until Feb 2020) of the Centre for Cancer Biology (CCB). His laboratory has made several seminal contributions to cell biology and cancer biology, through discoveries in cell death mechanisms and protein modification via ubiqutination. The team also investigates the role of ubiquitination in the regulation of membrane proteins and in the biogenesis of extracellular vesicles. His work has been recognised through the Ranbaxy Research Award, the ASBMB Lemberg Medal, the FAOBMB Research Excellence Award, the ANZSCDB President’s Medal, appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) and the South Australian Scientist of the Year award. He is a Felllow of the Australian Academy of Science as well as the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences.
