National Cancer Centre Singapore:
One In Five Tests Positive In Cancer Genetic Testing
The Cancer Genetics Service at the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) has seen a sharp rise in demand by patients requesting for genetic testing since 2014. Over the last 3 years, more than 1800 patients have had genetic risk assessment and clinical testing. On average, 20% of the patients tested are positive for one of the cancer predisposition syndromes.

Currently, over 400 hereditary cancer susceptibility syndromes have been described, most of which feature an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern. Although many of these are rare syndromes, they account for at least 5% - 10% of all cancer incidences. Read more

Complication From Shingles: Post-Herpetic Neuralgia
Post-Herpetic Neuralgia (PHN) is a major complication of shingles, with pain that can be constant or episodic, and that can worsen at night.

"PHN occurs when the virus stays in the body and causes pain even after the shingles have healed. Those above 55-years-old are 20% more likely to develop PHN because of decreased immunity," explains Dr Tan Kian Hian, Head, Senior Consultant and Director of the Pain Management Centre, Singapore General Hospital (SGH), SingHealth. Ketogenic Diet: Potential Complications
Although those on the ketogenic diet initially lose weight faster than those on other low-fat diets, they may over-indulge in processed or fatty meats instead of selecting lean meats, complex carbohydrates and poly- and monounsaturated fat.

A diet high in saturated fat has been shown to increase the risk of heart disease, a low-fibre diet increases the risk of cancer and a high-protein diet of meat and dairies has negative long-term effects on the kidney. A very-low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet can lead to dehydration, low blood pressure and the worsening of renal function. Read more
