Preventing Tuberculosis In the Elderly |

A study found that Singapore’s greying population has contributed to an increase in the number of tuberculosis cases since 2008, following a lengthy period of decline. The elderly currently account for 10% of Singapore’s population, but about 30% of tuberculosis patients are above the age of 65.
“In most people, their healthy immune system is able to fight off bacterial infections. But this is not so in the elderly who have weakened immunity,” said Dr Low Su Ying, Senior Consultant, Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Singapore General Hospital, a member of the SingHealth group.

| Bladder Pain Syndrome: Causes & Treatment |

As a chronic condition with an unknown aetiology and widespread definitions, Bladder Pain Syndrome is now generally accepted as a diagnosis of exclusion with no definitive diagnostic or confirmatory test.
Hence, other conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, urinary or genital tract infection and an overactive bladder, amongst others, should be excluded during the diagnosis.

For patients with corneal endothelial diseases, Endothelial Keratoplasty has overtaken Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK) as the corneal transplantation technique of choice over the past decade.
Besides providing excellent results in the form of improved visual outcomes, faster recovery, higher graft survival rate and a lower rate of postoperative complications compared to PK, Endothelial Keratoplasty will likely remain the mainstay of treatment for corneal endothelial diseases in the near future.
