Ms Goh Cheng Jee is a senior speech therapist in Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Rehabilitation Centre. Over the years of vocation, she has gained experience in a variety of adult settings including inpatient, outpatient and community rehabilitation. In the rehabilitation centre, she was involved in the management and rehabilitation of stroke, spinal cord injury and acquired brain injury patients.

She worked with largely adults with swallowing as well as communication difficulties. She has led a team in the management of geriatric medicine and general surgery patients. In the recent years, she has been actively involved in acquired brain injury cognitive communication rehabilitation and intervention for communication in spinal cord injury patients.

Abstract  :   Communication is part and parcel of life of everyone’s life and is often taken for granted. The difficulty in expressing oneself in any form of communication, verbal or nonverbal often reduces an individual’s quality of life. In some cases of tetraplegia, the presence of a tracheostomy tube decreases the ability of the patient to communicate effectively as well. Speech therapist’s intervention would be crucial in identifying the most appropriate tools/ ways for patients with tetraplegia to communicate effectively. In this presentation, we will explore several communication method/ tools that could be used to ease communication between patient with tetraplegia and their communication partners to improve the quality of life
