Dr Bernard F. Morrey, is the Emeritus Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics at Mayo Clinic. He holds the academic rank of Professor of Orthopaedics at both Mayo Clinic and at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, and is the Emeritus John and Posy Krehbiel Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Mayo Clinic.
He had previously served in a number of extramural professional capacities, including roles such as President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, President of the American Orthopaedic Association, and President of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. He has been the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, as well as the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. He served for 8 years on the Board of Governors of Mayo Clinic where he was primarily responsible for strategic planning and in monitoring and improving the cost effectiveness and quality of the Mayo practice. During these 8 years, he was also the Medical Director for Mayo’s material management department.
Dr. Morrey is a member of numerous specialty orthopaedic organizations, including the Orthopaedic Research Society, Hip Society, Knee Society and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. He is an honorary member of a number of international orthopedic societies, as well as the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, and of the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians, Canada. Dr. Morrey is a Fulbright Scholar, and a former member and consultant to the Food and Drug Administration Orthopaedic Device Panel and is on the ‘second opinion panel’ to the National Football League.
He has been recognized on numerous occasions for his contributions to the research arena – both clinically and administratively, nationally and abroad. Additional academic interests include NIH supported basic research investigations involving joint kinematics and more recently, he has investigated the genetic basis of host variation as it applies to the musculoskeletal system. He holds nine patents for orthopaedic devices, and he has authored 15 major textbooks under four different titles. These works have been translated into six languages, Dr. Morrey has regularly served as an external reviewer and visiting professor of orthopaedic training programs in the United States and internationally. He has authored over 435 peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Morrey’s major area of orthopaedic interest is adult reconstructive surgery with particular emphasis on the hip, knee and elbow. He is the Medical Director, Board member and was the interim CEO of Tenex Health, developing ultrasonic techniques to treat musculoskeletal disorders. He has been named a distinguished alumnus from St. Bernard College, the Mayo Clinic, the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston.r's Sesion:
