Despite being confronted with great scepticism a few years ago, the serious games movement has grown rapidly in the last decade. According to Citrix, the number of digital natives entering the workforce will increase to 75% by 2025. These young professionals who have grown up immersed in digital technologies will therefore have different learning styles and attitudes towards the learning process.

The workshop will outline ways to leverage the power of digital technologies e.g., video gaming and simulation, to meet the learning needs and preferences of modern learners. The basic principles and requirements in educational game development, steps in simulation game design and an introduction to user experience in gaming will be discussed, with reference to simulation games for procedural training in healthcare. The team will also share the experiences gained and lessons learnt from the development of neonatal resuscitation assessment game.

Learning Objectives:
  1. The basic principles of educational game development
  2. The requirements and steps in simulation game design
  3. The concept of user experience when developing an educational game
