Dr Koh Lip Hoe, Senior Consultant, Geriatric Medicine, CGH
In 2015, Dr Koh Lip Hoe and his team at the Palliative Care Service in Changi General Hospital (CGH) organised a wedding solemnisation ceremony in the hospital for the daughter of a patient who had advanced cancer, as she was too sick to leave the hospital. The nurses helped to apply make-up on the patient and decorated the discharge lounge where the solemnisation took place, and the patient was visibly elated to witness the ceremony. She passed away a few days after, and Dr Koh was gratified to have been part of that special moment towards the end of her days.
When the Palliative Care Service was first established in Changi General Hospital (CGH) in 2012, the team comprised only two nurses and two doctors, one of whom was Dr Koh, now Chief and Senior Consultant, Dept of Geriatric Medicine at CGH. Dr Koh had recently completed his training in Palliative Medicine then, and had to quickly assume responsibility in growing the service with his team to provide a wide array of services to meet the end-of-life care needs of their patients.
Over the years, the camaraderie they shared and their unwavering commitment to caring for end-of-life patients have motivated them to continue creating personal memories for patients as they approach the end of their journeys.
