Macrogol - What is it for

​Macrogols are used to treat constipation. This medication may take one to two days to work.

Macrogol - Side Effects, Precautions, and Contraindications

What side effects can Macrogol cause?

Common side effects include:

  • ​Diarrhoea
    • If you develop diarrhoea while taking this medication, temporarily stop taking the medication and consult your healthcare professional. It should go away one to two days after stopping this medication.
  • Other side effects include bloating, stomach pain and nausea and vomiting.

Rare but serious side effects include:

  • Stomach pain or cramps that does not go away, inability to pass gas or stool, fever or vomiting during the treatment.

The symptoms of a drug allergy include one or more of the following:

  • Swollen face/eyes/lips/tongue
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Itchy skin rashes over your whole body

If you experience any of these symptoms, you should stop your medication and see your healthcare professional immediately.

Before taking Macrogol, what precautions must I follow?

​Inform your healthcare professional if:

  • You are allergic to this medication or any of the other ingredients of this medication
  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
  • You are taking any other medications, including supplements, traditional medications and herbal remedies
  • You have kidney problems
  • You have a history of inflammatory bowel disease (e.g. ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease)
  • You have fructose intolerance as this medication contains sorbitol.

What food or medicine must I avoid when I take Macrogol?

​Inform your healthcare professional if you are taking or intend to take any other medication, supplements, traditional medications or herbal remedies.

Space this medication two hours apart from other medications.

How should Macrogol be used?

  • ​Do not stop taking your medication without checking with your healthcare professional.
  • You may take this medication with or without food.
  • Dissolve each sachet in a full glass of water before you drink.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

​If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Then take your next dose at the usual time. Do not take two doses to make up for the missed dose.
