New Year New Gears

In the spirit of fresh beginnings, the start of the year is a time for reflection and refocusing on goals that matter. From professional aspirations to personal fulfilment, three SCH colleagues share their new year resolutions for an exciting year ahead.

Tell us, what are you looking forward to at work this year?

Patricia Thean, Executive, Support Operations: I look forward to improving my knowledge and experience in Operations areas. I am excited to be supporting the SKCH Medical Record Office this year, which is a new portfolio as part of my career development at SCH. Bring a Peer Supporter and member of YouDaJoy, I also hope to support my peers not just for work matters but bring joy to them too.

Mohammad Faisal Bin Shaharud, Staff Nurse: It would be to pay more attention to little things that can make a difference for patients and myself. I hope to cultivate good habits that are crucial especially for my role as a nurse. Examples include greeting my patients every morning and being mindful about the way I communicate with them. These are often easier said than done. I also believe that we need to have humility to be a good learner and improve ourselves.

Lee Yei Shuai, Physiotherapist: Nowadays, rehabilitation therapy is undergoing a transformation. Emerging technologies, from artificial intelligence to wearable technology, are used to meet patients' unique needs and goal. Technology can also make rehabilitation more interactive and enjoyable. I joined the Rehab inventory team recently and hope to familiarise myself with the work as soon as possible so that I can integrate more new technologies into our rehab sessions.

And what have you got penned down in your personal calendar?

Patricia: I hope to travel more with my family this year. Travelling improves family bonding and creates sweet and precious memories. As a mother of two daughters, I take the opportunity to share tips on travelling safely. On the checklist this year will be to visit the holy churches in Spain as part of the family's pilgrimage tour!

Faisal: I would like to read more books! I used to be a voracious reader and am an avid fan of the humanities. They are often seen as impractical fields but I beg to differ. Subjects like philosophy and literature can help us think clearly or read and interpret things better. They're enlightening stuff. I also want to be more knowledgeable and informed in the subject of gerontology. I feel that it's an interesting field that I can contribute in.

Yeh Shuai: I would love to explore more diving hotspots. Being underwater and being enveloped in a world of muted sounds provides a calming and serene auditory experience, which makes me feel relaxed and at peace. I have already applied leave for my next dive at Cebu, and I am looking forward to spot some marine creatures such as whale sharks, thresher sharks manta rays and blue ringed octopus.
